The Wolverine (2013)
9/10: Been excited to see this and was not disappointed. I AM, however, disappointed in IMDb ratings (6.9), Metacritic (60 critic/6.8 user), and RT (68% critic/72% user). The 72% user rating on RT is the only one that comes close to making sense.
My guess? These ratings are based on the PG-13 theater version I’ve never seen. The Blu-Ray extended version is an adrenaline fest of some serious badass Wolverine fuck-em-up happy fun times and made up for X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Hell, the credits scene was a nerdgasm alone.
This is an action movie/comic book summer blockbuster, right? Then they fucking nailed it. Yeah, like every X-Men movie so far, they took some canonical liberties, but they did the character right in my view, and by comic book/action flicks, and it’s right up there with Marvel’s best: X2, First Class, and Avengers.
This tops all three Iron Man movies, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Incredible Hulk, Punisher, Punisher: War Zone, Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man 3, Ghost Rider, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Daredevil, Elektra, Blade, and Blade Trinity.
If you only saw the theater version, give it another go. If you can’t appreciate Wolverine versus shitloads of Yakuza and ninjas, maybe comic book action movies aren’t really your thing.
I’d be curious to know the opinion of lifelong Wolverine fan Jesse Therrien, but I think this movie is underrated as fuck.
